The Shat hits the fan

Right, Tara's tagged me for this book thingy everyone's doing, so here we go…

1. Pick up the nearest book.
2. Open to page 123
3. Find the 5th sentence
4. Post the next three sentences
5. Tag five people, and acknowledge who tagged you.

1. OK, so the nearest book to me at the moment is actually my unpublished novella in scruffy proof form, but that actually doesn't have 123 pages so I can't use that (if anyone wants a glimpse of what's going on in it feel free to nominate a page number below 100 and I'll happily do the meme based on that in the comments section).

Right, the next book that's closest to me is … Dreamweaver CS3 for Dummies. Hmmm… Now, this is a very good, very easy to follow book, but I think it's a bit dry for this meme.

So I'm going to reach for the third closest book, which is the one I'm currently reading:

Ah, Shatty, what would I do without you?

2. Page 123. Right, done that. It's a beauty!

3. Sentence number five … there you are!

4. "Actors are ambitious people. And every moment center stage can lead to the next job. The day I reported to work on the first episode of Star Trek I was already wondering what would come next."

OK, so compared to what I've read of this book so far, that's a pretty dull few lines. Nothing compared to the time he stalked a brown bear armed only with a bow and arrow, or paddled to New York from Canada in an old-fashioned canoe. And that's one of the first mentions of Star Trek - it's a bit light on Star Trek, I think because he's covered that part of his life fairly comprehensively in his previous two autobiographies, Star Trek Memories and Star Trek Movie Memories. That's by no means a complaint, though; it's fascinating to read about his time on the stage and the parts of his life that have been overshadowed by the role of Captain Kirk. It's a great, very enjoyable, and very funny book.

5. Oh, I'm not going to bother tagging anyone - if you haven't done it and want to do it, do it!

Yay, thanks for doing this meme! I think compared to some other memes out there, this one is pretty quick to do (if you have some books around).

Can you imagine being on the lake in a regular boat or whatever and seeing Shatner paddling by you in a canoe on the way to Canada? Too funny.

I want to have a glimpse of your book! Um....page...55 please!

I enjoyed it! I like pretty much anything to do with books…

Page 55?

“The usual?”
Rosin raised her eyebrows and nodded just once.
Betty threw a cloth over her shoulder and began to work the espresso machine with a deftness that only came from years of experience.

Inexplicable DeVice said...

Eww! I don't want to know about Betty's experience. Yuk!

However, I do wish to be enlightened as to page 22 of your novella.

Thank you!

Ah good old Bubba Shatner.

I'd like to hear about page.... 69?

I'm surprised IDV didn't ask for that.

Dinah said...

Heh. Quick thinking, Cyberpete!

This makes me want to read Shatner's books.

I don't think I could ever use Dreamweaver because I'd be too busy singing the song in my head.

Tim said...

Inexplicable Device - Well, she has plenty of it, let me tell you.

Page 22?

Thank Christ he never opened the curtains. He ran both hands over his face, then closed his eyes again. Just a couple more minutes, he thought.

Cyberpete - I know, how great is Shatman Bill?

Page 69? Tsk… you boys…

And what would she tell Robert? Oh, god, what if Robert found out? She was shaking, and she silently cursed herself for getting into this situation.

Dinah - Read it! It's really good!! Shatner's book, that is, not the Dreamweaver one. Well, that's good too, but for different reasons.

Sounds like an intriguing read so far!

Okay, how bout posting pages 1 through 100? Actually, if you posted your whole book, that would take away from the excitement of buying the book when it's on the market and on the day you're at a popular bookstore for your book signing!

CyberPete said...

Uuuuh the plot thickens...

Someone was naughty wasn't she?

Can't wait to buy your book. Will you be doing book signings?

Tim said...

Tara - Oh, OK, well on pa- Hang on a minute… you almost tricked me there, didn't you? Ha!

Cyberpete - Maybe… Dude, when it's printed I'll put an imprint of my hand in it if you want!

Miss Smuggersham said...

Tee hee! Pete totally stole my number. Sounds interesting. What's all this about drawing the curtains?

It's not going to help me go all Kathy Bates in Misery on your arse at all.

Tim said...

If I told you about the curtains I might spoil it.

And T-Bird, if anyone was going to imprison me in a log cabin and cripple me, I'd hope it would be you.

Inexplicable DeVice said...

Great. I'll just have to be one of the dirty birdies, then.

Bah.

Tim said...

No change there then…

I am reading The Average American Male at the moment...
MAy do the meme with that. Should be semi-pornographic then.

Miss Smuggersham said...

Yay! I'm Tim's super number one stalker of choice!

It's the ace rack, isn't it? By the way... how did you feel about The Crying Game?

CyberPete said...

Well just remember, if there is a Danish guy asking "could you make that out to Pete please?" in a Geri Halliwell accent with an aussie twang you'll know it's me.

Tim said...

Watch*Paint*Dry - Oh god, do it - that book is *filthy*!

T-Bird - Yeah, you can be my number-one card carrying good times stalker! Yes, it's the ace rack. I never saw The Crying Game, although I believe it's a movie that will confuse my penis. She's such a pretty lady but then OH SWEET LORD IN HEAVEN NO!!!

Cyberpete - I've logged that in my brain. You sound quite distinctive.

Miss Smuggersham said...

I don't ever think I have either read, nor heard the words 'confuse my penis' before. And I do believe that it is a phrase that I will use daily.

Not because I have one, you understand. I just like to diffuse situations in which I feel like a stalker by implying I have one.

Oh. I just gave it all away.

Maybe my penis *is* confused.

Let's all just focus on my rack, shall we?

Tim said...

ARRRRGH! Now I'm confused!!

Miss Smuggersham said...

Boobies, Tim. Boobies.

Tim said...

Is that our safe word?

The Shat! I bought my fiancé Tek War for a Christmas present and he didn't leave me. That's a keeper.

CyberPete said...

I've never watched The Crying Game, is it any good?

Or more importantly will it confuse *my* penis?

Tim said...

Sylvie Girl - God, I loved the Tek War books. I might have to get the DVDs… Based on your purchase of it, and him not leaving you, I'm going to assume you're both awesome people.

Cyberpete - I've not seen it either. But I have seen StarGate, and that has the penis dude in it.
